The man pulling radishes

points the way

with a radish.

-Issa

One chilly winter morning

over breakfast in a small restaurant, a Wise Woman girlfriend

fatefully suggested to the Dollmaker the idea of having a

and all on it's own

a word did appear:

Every masterpiece is a flower on a precipice...

Beyond the village

a poor farmer

watches the moon.

-Basho

Haiku-

 an invitation

to paint with words

in short quick strokes..

..a challenge to briefly convey

not so much -information-

as a feeling for

the essence of This Moment.

To compose a Haiku is to

penetrate deeply into the

Here and Now...

and say as much with Omission

as with Inclusion...

 ...attuned

to the simplest things

 life has to offer...

Observing Nature

becomes a Spiritual Path...

The basic form is

three lines, seventeen syllables

however, strict syllabic structure is often sacrificed

(even by- especially by- Haiku Masters such as Basho)

in unlocking the Heart of the Experience...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"When a feeling reaches it's highest pitch,
 we remain silent
and even 17 syllables may be too many."
-D. T. Suzuki
Translation:
All beings are blossoms
blossoming in
a blossoming universe.
The Flamenco Influence
On another day in
in her email, the Dollmaker found a request for a
Flamenco Doll.
Ah, the Passion of Flamenco..
the flash of castanets, the flouncing dresses, lacy fans, spinning shawls...
the whirling and the posing and the arching- the flying fabrics...
she just needed a "way in" - a style that could work with all that flounciness-
The Long Curl Style arose from the Flamenco Influence but
 it also worked well for
Spirit Dolls
 The special order Spirit Dolls of January
And the Spirit Doll (Flamenco) Style will also work for the
Valley of the Vapors Dolls
{for the 2019 Woman's Conference (in Hot Springs, Arkansas this year) in February}
...the Dollmaker's new shipping boxes arrived just in time!
Learn about a pine tree from a pine tree
and about a bamboo stalk from a bamboo stalk.
-Basho
~Doll Shoppe News~
 That huge Pine Tree at the back of the Wee Peeple Garden
at the Texas Renaissance Festival
which was destroying the Dollmaker's sidewalk
making it unsafe (and often actually impossible)
 for wagons, wheelchairs, and scooters to pass through the garden
is history now.
The enormous roots were also raising the back end of the foundation
and a ramp had to be built Inside the Shoppe so that people wouldn't trip!
2018
2015
Underground roots created an upward slope from the back to the front of the garden
In 2012
the sidewalk buckled upwards and had to be repaired
2017
January 2019
The new TRF Site Manager ordered the tree to be cut down this month.
The Dollmaker had to go up there to see it for herself.
The stump is scheduled to be ground in two weeks, and the original level of the garden pathway restored.
AND
the Century Plant Stalk, first noticed in the Spring of 2016
finally fell over in the winter of 2019...
towering giant, broken
now there is
 too much sky
Oh leaves, ask the wind
which of you
Will be the first to fall.
- Soseki
Cherry blossoms whirl, leaves fall,
and the wind flits them both along the ground.
We cannot arrest with our eyes or ears what lies in such things.
Were we to gain mastery over them,
we would find that the life of each thing
had vanished without a trace.
Many spiritual teachers say you're most likely to succeed at meditation if
you sit quietly in a sanctuary. They believe you need to retreat from the world
in order to develop compassionate objectivity about life.
The 18th-century Zen Buddhist teacher Hakuin Ekaku had a different view. He said:
"Meditation in the midst of activity is a billion times superior to meditation in stillness."
